GALILEO streets ahead RACING POST STORY BY RACHEL PAGONES
GALILEO is so far in front of the third-season sire standings,
based on total prize-money won in Britain and Europe,
that the earnings for the next three sires down the list put together
do not add up to the Pfd.1.444.743 won by his runners.
Irish Derby winner SOLDIER OF FORTUNE is responsible for nearly half that sum,
but with six European Pattern winners and nine pattern wins to his credit halfway
through the 2007 season, GALILEO is clearly no one-trick pony.
MAHLER, winner of the 2m Queen’s Vase, has been his other big three-year-old,
while ALLEGRETTO (2m Henry II Stakes and Thursday’s Goodwood Cup),
RED ROCKS (1m2f Gordon Richards Stakes) and SIXTIES ICON (1m4f Jockey Club Stakes)
have continued to do his first crop proud with Group wins at four.
On the up-and-coming front, his son NEW APPROACH looks like one of the most exiting
three-year-old prospects for next year after remaining unbeaten with a win in the Group 3
Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown last Saturday.
Further bolstering the portfolio, GALILEO’s three-year-old daughter MAMIBIA won a Listed
1m event in Munich last Sunday, and his heritage could not have been hotter last weekend.
as on Saturday his half-sister MY TYPHOON won her first Grade 1, the Diana Stakes at Saratoga,
becoming the third top-class winner out of their dam, the Arc winner URBAN SEA.
This is no tangential matter, as female lines are just as important to a stallion’s success as sire lines.
In the case of SADLER’S WELLS, we all know of the disappointments pre the MONTJEU and GALILEO era,
and although the secret’s behind MONTJEU’s family may be a bit more esoteric,
the strength in GALILEO’s family is something any pedigree ingenue can grasp.
The first two generations have produced more than a dozen black-type winners
as well as the useful-lookingyoung sires ANABAA BLUE, KING’S BEST and TERTULLIAN,
who appears in 15th place on the third-season sires’table.
MY TYPHOON must be among a very short list bought for seven-figure sums (as a foal, no less)
who’ve earned in seven figures on the racecourse.
Granted, she cost 1.800.000gns, and if the dollar keeps going south,
it will take more than a Breeders’ Cup win to earn that back, but $1.3m in prize-money
is something few sale-toppers achieve in their life.
