VALUE SIRES: EUROS WITH RUNNERS

|

There are seven active stallions in Kentucky standing for $100,000 or more in 2010,
|
|
|
but there are now eight in Europe, which shows you how much the balance of power has changed.
|
|
|
Four of those eight are listed as private, including Coolmore's formidable trio of Galileo, (Sadler’s Wells)
|
|
|
Montjeu, (Sadler’s Wells, Dam-sire Top Ville) and Danehill Dancer; and Germany's Monsun.
|
|
|
An estimate of $250,000 wouldn't be far off the cost of buying a season to Galileo,
|
|
which makes him the most expensive sire on the list. That's fitting, because he's also the best,
|
|
but it's been a fair few years since Europe has figured as prominently as it does now in the:
|
|
|
There are a few shrewd American breeders who are sending mares to Europe now.
|
|
That's another indication of how much the balance has shifted.
|
|
|
Just as the $100,000 sires in Kentucky--Distorted Humor, Giant's Causeway, Medaglia d'Oro--look reasonable
|
|
|
prices to pay to breed to horses at the top of the tree, the same is true for the three top sires in Great Britain,
|
|
|
each of whom will be standing for ,65,000 (about $106,000) in 2010:
|
|
|
Cheveley Park's Pivotal and the Juddmonte pair of Dansili and Oasis Dream.
|
|
|
There are those who said Oasis Dream jumped too far, and Dansili should have come down a bit,
|
|
but the reality is there are 15 sires that will stand for $100,000 and up next year in North America and Europe,
|
|
|
and if you accept the horse you're discussing deserves to be among that top 15,
|
|
|
then $100,000 isn't expensive. Not that you can probably get into any of these 15 stallions at this point anyway,
|
|
so we'll again concentrate our suggestions to stud fees below $50,000--with one exception
|
|
|
I've no idea if you could still get into him or not, so if you have a season booked to Sea the Stars' sire,
|
|
|
Kildangan's (Darley) Cape Cross (remains at i35,000), well done.
|
|
|
Statistics compiled by Hyperion Promotions through Nov. 30 showed he was Europe's leading sire of 2009,
|
|
with progeny earnings over ,6.9 million. That converts to $11.3 million, which is more than the progeny
|
|
of North America's leading sire, Giant's Causeway, have earned this year
|
|
|
At a stud fee that converts to about $52,500, that makes Cape Cross, for me,
|
|
|
the standout buy of the year on either continent.
